About Us
We specialise in making hand made floor and wall tiles, reproducing most tiles of any period and specialise particularly in making tiles to create atmosphere and charm for your kitchen bathroom or conservatory. Our tiles are all hand made so each one is individual and can be cut to most sizes. No two tiles are precisely identical. We take great pride in our work and try to offer a good old fashioned service. We hope that when you have our tiles in place that they will give you great and lasting pleasure for years to come.
As a member of The Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society we have access to a wide ranging field in both traditional and modern designs as well as technical background.
Plain terracotta antique effect French country style pamettes
These come as plain tiles and unglazed, they are best coated with a covering of boiled linseed oil once they have been placed in situ.
For floors.
Encaustic Tiles

Encaustic (inlaid) tiles are available unglazed (or glazed to special
order) Encaustic tiles are traditionally used for high status flooring
and are consequently made thicker than wall tiles.
Most of our designs originate in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Undecorated field tiles are available in white, yellow or terracotta.
Special colours can be made to order.
All our tiles are nominally 13.5cm. square and 2.5cm thick. This is an
approximate size and can vary depending on which clay body is used.
These tiles are provided with a cut-back. This allows for setting in
lime mortar without a noticeable grout line as was traditional.
We can advise on finishing the surface in traditional and modern ways, in some applications no surface finish is required.
Our tiles are hand made and we can make any suitable design if required.
The Process
These traditional earthenware tiles are made for flooring and originals
can often be found in high

status mediaeval buildings. They are made in
wooden moulds on a flat surface by impressing carved wooden stamps into
the wet clay surface and making voids of the required designs. These
voids are filled with clay of a contrasting colour. The surfaces are
then struck off to reveal the designs.
The process, including making the stamps, is time consuming and
skilled. Different clays tend to shrink at different rates so there are
often wasters caused by cracking. The surviving tiles are the ones we
offer for sale and these are strong, stable and beautiful. Some
examples from 800 years ago are still going strong because the design
is not just on the surface, the tile can wear away but the design
remains.
Sgraffito tiles

Sgraffito means 'scratched'. The designs are formed by tooling the
slipped clay surface revealing the body colour. These tiles are more
often glazed and we usually make them thinner than encaustic tiles. We
can however leave unglazed if required or make them thicker. We can
make these tiles to any design you choose.
Smaller sgraffito can be made to order if required. Delivery times depend upon design and quantity.
Special tiles
We also make impressed 'nature' tiles, coloured tile panels and even sgraffito vessels. Ask for details if you are interested.
